Why Ongoing Partnerships with Local Organizations Matter

Why Ongoing Partnerships with Local Organizations Matter

download.jpg

On December 19, NxtGov organized a volunteer event at the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services (SFBFS) clothing donation center. This was our third recurring event at the clothing donation center since we committed to an ongoing partnership of volunteering every other month.

I feel so fortunate to be able to give back to such an important organization in our community. While organizing and hanging clothing donations is just one small piece of SFBFS’ work, it means a lot to contribute to the mission and help out the staff. We have also participated in food donation sorting and the annual turkey distribution at SFBFS. There is something special about our continued involvement at the clothing donation center.

As volunteers, we sort clothes that our neighbors have donated to the site. We do not simply hang and sort the clothes—we make the “sales floor” a pleasant and clean refuge for those in need. I like to think that we are a welcoming presence for the shoppers, who sometimes have kids wanting to play or are in search for a special item. We are there when volunteers are abundant and our job is to stock the back for busy times. We are also there when the “sales floor” is in disarray and in need of some love.

Because I have organized a number of volunteer events with SFBFS, I can help train new volunteers—in our group or with others. I have grown to know the full-time employees and look forward to seeing them on our Wednesday nights together.

There is something magical about being a part of something bigger than ourselves. While folding clothes for a few hours is a small action in and of itself, I know that doing so helps brings together like-minded public servants around a culture of service. I cannot wait to see NxtGov continue to spread this mission—and these feelings of connectedness, purpose, and giving.

– Meagan, NxtGov’s Community Engagement Director.

We are a nonpartisan organization, but we recognize the opportunity of engaging in the process of electing leaders that reflect our values. Election Day brought a significant increase in civic engagement in most of the country.

NxtGov is hosting our Election Event this Friday November 9th.

This smaller, but significant election represents our work in serving the public, collaborating across the silos, and inspiring the current and next generation of public servants; those that will stay and continue to serve for a better good no matter the politics.

The NxtGov Executive Team Election is a representation of growth and the acceptance of change. We learn, we grow, we pay it forward, and we adapt.

Over the last year, NxtGov has continued to expand thanks to the support from our members, leaders and partners. It is your support that allows us to flourish in our mission to bring pride back to public service and break the silos that can help us transform government.

The diversity of our effort is uplifting.

Our NxtGov Ambassadors represent 15 departments across state and local government with experience spanning from a few months to 10 or more years in the public/private sector.

Our network has over 400 members from across all backgrounds and we are proud to continue to support local organizations that connect with our values of service, collaboration, and inspiration.

Join us at the NxtGov Election Event Friday, November 9th from 5pm to 7pm at Sacramento City Hall where you will be able to hear from our NxtGov Executive Team Candidates and have the opportunity to meet members, partners, and sponsors; including one of our first and biggest supporters, GovOps Agency Secretary Marybel Batjer.

You can still engage and support our public servant leaders. They are ready to take NxtGov to the next level. Cast your vote now.

Sincerely,

Angie

Government needs to close racial pay gaps in its workforce

Government needs to close racial pay gaps in its workforce

14%. That’s the estimated racial/ethnic pay gap between employees of color and White employees across California’s civil service workforce, a new report finds. While that may seem like a relatively small difference, that 14% pay gap can add up to a salary or wage disparity of approximately $10,000 each year.

The problem becomes only worse when one compares the average pay of historically underrepresented minorities (URM, which includes Black, Hispanic/Latin@, and American Indian communities), and females of color with the average pay of higher paid males, such as White and Asian males. In fact, analysis of publicly available data show that pay gaps between some females of color and White males reach an upwards of 36%.

What is driving these race and gender pay inequities?

This analysis, prepared by Hinnaneh Qazi, as part of her UC Berkeley Masters of Public Policy Graduate capstone project, in partnership with the California’s Health in All Policies Task Force, shows that the these disparities are largely a result of overrepresentation of females of color in part-time and seasonal work, concentration of URM employees in lower paying occupations as opposed to higher paying occupations groups, and White employees being more likely to hold management positions, especially the highest paid management positions. Using supplemental data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey (ACS), the paper also illustrates that pay inequality persists even after controlling for educational attainment.

Moving forward, the State has the opportunity to investigate what is causing those inequities – and examine underlying issues related to recruitment, outreach, retention, culture, and/or promotion. NxtGov supports work like this through our program areas, but it takes more than that. We believe our workforce should equitably reflect the diversity of our state, especially in Sacramento, one of the most diverse cities in the nation.

California is a leader in shedding greater light on the State’s gender pay gap. They’ve also taken significant measures to mitigate it, from the passage of the California Fair Pay Act (SB 358) in 2015 and a bill in 2017 (AB 168) which bans employers from inquiring about a job candidate’s salary history. This year, members of NxtGov participated in unfocus groups applying UX principles to assess the use of current state tools that could be improved to increase professional development.

It’s now time to take on racial pay inequities in addition to and in intersection with gender equity – and other cities, states, and the federal public sector should follow suit.

How Can Government Embrace Innovation Without Fear?

How Can Government Embrace Innovation Without Fear?

Government is risk-averse, and for good reason; but when risk-aversion paralyzes and disables progress and evolution, it’s time for government employees to seek out other options to design and deliver public services. Amidst the layers of bureaucracy, government employees often struggle to see how their work makes an impact. How can employees make the change they want to see in the world? The answer may lie in the evolving world of agile-methodologies and user-centered design.

What if public servants worked directly with the user of a government service in order to deliver immediate value? Passionate public servants could find an opportunity to test out ideas and make adjustments more quickly and effectively than through the traditional path of change in government.

The Challenge
NxtGov Ambassadors and the NxtGov Executive Team considered these issues and developed this challenge statement for fellow public servants:

Users First: Embracing Innovation without Fear

User expectations and our employees’ ability to deliver collaborative, innovative, holistically effective processes and services are dependent on having a flexible and trusting environment that allows us to be experimental and build upon innovative ideas without the fear of failure or repercussion.

How might we eliminate restrictive practices that impose an expectation of perfection and finality that exclude the end-user of the process or service? How might we change the current “traditional” practices that impede our workforce from being agile and adopting human-centered design practices in our daily work?

  • Do you want to cultivate your good ideas into solutions that give value?
  • Do you want to team innovative pathways to California’s most challenging enterprise problems?
  • Do you want to create a culture that can sustain, advance and accelerate services to society?

You Can Help Us Find the Answers

NxtGov is partnering with ORA Systems Inc., APSEA, GovOps and others in the California Innovation Playbook for Government Change Agents (Cal-IPGCA) Training program. The program will address this issue (and others) with help of this year’s cohort of Leaders, Innovators and Change Agents in government.

Are you a government employee interested in participating in the Cal-IPGCA Cohort 2018? One lucky NxtGov member will qualify for a scholarship to participate in this year’s program. Applications are due July 31st.

Feel free to reach out to our NxtGov leadership team or see here to learn more about the Cal-IPGCA program. The program takes place from August 9th- December 6th.
